5 Auckland dog parks to enjoy this month

A good exercise routine for your dog involves physical as well as mental stimulation. Exploring a new track is a great way for your pooch to get both.

So if you and your furry friend are looking for walks around Auckland, here are some of the best dog parks in the city.

1. Waiatarua Reserve, Meadowbank

Open 24 hours a day.

If you love bird watching, wetlands and getting away from it all, this dog park is for you.

Waiatarua Reserve truly makes you feel you’re far away from the city, with shady trees, large areas of water, pukeko and other water birds all around. It’s a good 60-minute walk if you do the whole thing.
What’s more, the park offers an off-leash and swimming area. You can chill out at one of the picnic tables or viewing platforms, and children will enjoy the children’s playground, basketball court and skate park.

2. Sanders Reserve and Bike Park, Albany

Open daily, 6am to 8:30pm.

Your dog will be able to get rid of all their excess energy in this large, fenced park with plenty of slopes to keep things varied.

Outside the fenced area is a park where leashed dogs can walk dogs can join on you a walking path, leading you to a ridge above water, where a tree is carved into beautiful sculptures.

3. Auckland Botanic Gardens, Manurewa

Summer hours: Daily from 8am to 8pm.

You’ll love looking at the variety of flora at the botanic gardens while you and your pup meander along the on-leash footpath, wandering over duckponds via boardwalks.

With 64 hectares of garden, there’s no shortage of space for you and your pup to explore. If you want a high-intensity workout for your pooch, they’ll love the off-leash area, where they can run and play to their heart’s content.

4.  Craigavon Park, Green Bay

Open 24 hours a day.

Dogs love Craigavon Park, where they’re allowed off leash everywhere in the park except for the kids’ playground. There’s also a walking trail, a stream and lots of tall trees providing shade.

Looking for things to do in Auckland today? You can’t beat one of these dog parks for some fun in the sun with your pup.

5. Auckland Domain, Grafton

Open 24 hours a day.

The city’s oldest park boasts 10 hectares of fields. A section of the park, known as Gum Tree Hill, is one of the city’s most popular off-leash areas. As the name suggests, tall gum trees provide shade on summery days, providing a comfy picnic spot for dog owners.
